Google Joins EU Complaint against Microsoft

Google is joining a European competition complaint against Microsoft. Google believes that Microsoft abused its dominant position to compete with other web browser as Chrome, FireFox & Opera.

According to Google there is still not a fair competition in the market for Web browsers . Thats mainly caused due Internet Explorer is intertwined with operating system Windows, by far the majority of PC owners use.  IE has an unfair advantage over other browsers, says Google. In the mobile market, where IE can not piggyback on Windows, the market share is much smaller, notes the Google.

Innovation

Google says that the dominance of IE is bad for the innovation of the Internet. Microsoft’s browser technology is less advanced than, for example, Firefox, Safari, Opera or Google’s own web browser Chrome. Because IE so widely used by consumers,  web sites often do not use the latest technologies because IE doesn’t support these or generate errors. 

Google is therefore supporting an ongoing competition investigation of the European Commission against Microsoft. In January was announced that Microsoft is forced to release operating system Windows without Internet Explorer standard on it.

The Commission is also considering to give Microsoft consumers the choice to switch between different web browsers at the first use of a Windows PC .

Mozilla

The EU investigation is a result of a complaint from the Norwegian browser manufacturer Opera , which accused Microsoft in 2007 of unfair competition. Earlier this month also Mozilla, the organization behind Firefox, supported this complaint against Microsoft.

Chrome

Google is since 2008, also a browser manufacturer. In September Google presented Google Chrome, a browser which Google specifically designed for the use with modern websites and online applications like Google’s own mail service and office applications. Chrome has a market share of around 1 percent but can increase rapidly when Microsoft is forced to remove IE from a standard Windows install.
