Speed test: Google Chrome beats Firefox, IE, Safari

Google introduced Chrome in part because it wants faster browsing and the richer Web applications that speed will unlock. So how does Chrome actually stack up?

Lars Bak, the Google engineer who was the technical leader for Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine, said at the launch event Tuesday he's confident Chrome is “many times faster” than the rivals at running JavaScript, the programming language that powers Google Docs, Gmail, and many other Web applications.

Google offers a site with five JavaScript benchmarks. On each one of these tests, Chrome clearly trounced the competition. I hope benchmarking experts and developers will weigh in with comments about how well these tests represent true JavaScript performance on the Web–either for ordinary sites or for rich Web apps.

Here's the site description of the speed tests:

Richards: OS kernel simulation benchmark, originally written in BCPL by Martin Richards (539 lines)

DeltaBlue: One-way constraint solver, originally written in Smalltalk by John Maloney and Mario Wolczko (880 lines).

Crypto: Encryption and decryption benchmark based on code by Tom Wu (1,689 lines).

RayTrace: Ray tracer benchmark based on code by Adam Burmister (3,418 lines).

EarleyBoyer: Classic Scheme benchmarks, translated to JavaScript by Florian Loitsch's Scheme2Js compiler (4,682 lines).

LOL of course Google Chrome beats Firefox, IE and Safari because it doesn't have any extensions whatsoever. OMG, it doesn't even come with Flash and Java and you call this a web browser?

Put all the stuff Firefox has to Chrome and make that test again…

Wow I was impressed by the screenshots but after I read the previous post im not really amazed at all. If it doesnt have any of that then thats pretty lame to compare it like that. Why didnt they compare it with Firefox without all those things.

Try using Fasterfox addon on your version of Firefox and then do those speed tests again. ROFL. Yea right…….at the moment the only thing Goggle Chrome is, is a dream for geeks who want to fiddle with betas. I actually need my PC to work every time I do something, not crash or give me errors all the time.

I'm pretty sure those benchmarks are not the real deal. Because they're made by google, obviously they'll make them to look as if Chrome is trouncing the competition, I mean they must be making use of a particular improvement they made in chrome. Its only fair to allow other browser makers time to make those.

I do agree that they can really beat up firefox and IE because it has no extensions and add ons yet. Considering the fact that all they have is just a browser with no other armful of things around it then it would surely be easy to carry out. Let us just see again if they could maintain the speed if they have already established there browser and could come up with plug ins and add ons
